2008 Red Cross Designers' Showhouse
The Red Cross Designers’ Showhouse is a charitable event whereby local designers have the opportunity to demonstrate their expertise and creativity in designing a space.
Our space was originally a small home gym. As you can see, it was transformed to a restful oasis… a place to read and relax.
Our inspiration for the space was two-fold… we wanted to convey the meditative quality of Eastern philosophies while maintaining a sense of locale – beautiful Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. As such, we call the style of the space “Osian” – a cross between Asian and Ocean – which becomes readily apparent in the details of the room. The dark ocean green ceiling immediately conveys a feeling of being under the sea. The rest of the room, with one grand window and warm yellow walls simulates the sun filtering through the water, keeping the small space light and bright. The Buddha-inspired artwork was enhanced by mounting it on a zebra-wood board. The book shelves and candle shelf were hand-crafted from rough hewn teak. For those with an eye for detail, the shelf brackets, made from burl with a unique edge simulate exotic coral. The floor cushion is upholstered in a beautiful deep green silk with a soft coral pattern. The plush flokati rug elevates the meaning of “cozy”… several visitors to the space simply had to take their shoes off and feel the softness of the rug on their feet. The low slung chair, with its straight, modern lines maintains the room’s elegance, as does the sheer draperies that puddle at the floor. The carved, hardwood table was perfect for a cup of coffee in the morning or glass of wine in the evening and the tome of choice. The ocean was in the details too… beautifully colored seashells used sparingly, but in all the right places, a reading light that resembles a jellyfish, and florals that once again invoke a feeling of undersea corals.
Although this was a Designers’ Showhouse, we did not want to create a showroom. Our goal was to create an inviting space, a usable space – a place to sit and read, or simply relax. We believe we were successful as evidenced by the many visitors that came in, took off their shoes and took a deep, cleansing breath.
The Designers’ Showhouse was an excellent opportunity for community involvement, professional teamwork and personal satisfaction. We are honored to have participated in the 2008 Designers’ Showhouse.
